| General Description - |
The Fox Squirrel is a medium-sized tree squirrel (slightly larger than the similar Gray Squirrel) with large dark eyes, small ears, a long bushy tail, hand-like front paws, large and strong hind legs, and a number of other characteristics typical of tree squirrels, including anatomical adaptations for climbing and jumping.
Sexual dimorphism is virtually nonexistent, and male and female Fox Squirrels are, for all practical purposes, identical in appearance.
|
 |
| Male Description - |
Male Fox Squirrels have a coloration that very closely resembles that of the Gray Fox, possibly accounting for the squirrel’s name.
Peppered gray fur covers the Fox Squirrel’s upperparts and tail, and is bordered by a reddish or orange color where it meets the squirrel’s lightly colored under-parts.
The palms and soles of the Fox Squirrel’s forepaws and hind-paws are black in color.

It is reported that male Fox Squirrels forma dominance hierarchy for access to females.
Fox Squirrel will mate throughout the year, however, breeding usually peaks during the months of January and February, and then again in May and June.
Both male and female Fox Squirrels will take multiple mates over the course of a breeding season.

 |
| Nest Description - |
Fox Squirrels will nest in cavities, both natural and man-made.
They are also known to construct distinctive ball-shaped nests high in tree branches using a combination of twigs and leaves. These nests are typically 12 to 20 inches in diameter.
Nests are used as general shelter in addition to their use as nurseries for young squirrels.
|
| Nest Location - |
Constructed Nests can be found near the tops of thickly branched trees.
Cavity nests occur in knot holes, and in suitable place in man-made structures, such as attics.
|
| Nest Building - |
Fox Squirrels attend to nest building according to their individual needs. For the purposes of housing a litter of baby squirrels, the female is responsible for constructing the nest. |

| Feeding Habits - |
Fox Squirrels typically feed in trees bearing the nuts, fruits, or other food items they are interested in.
Fox Squirrels are opportunistic, and will often demonstrate a good deal of ingenuity accessing bird feeders and other man-made food supplies for their contents.
These squirrels also spend a good deal of time foraging for acorns, pecans and other nuts on the ground. These items are frequently buried in a cache to be accessed during times when other food sources are less available.
|
| Diet - |
Fox Squirrels consume various foods including fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, flower buds, pine cones, Osage Oranges (Horse Apples), insects, eggs, birds, and small reptiles. |

| Habitat - |
Fox Squirrels frequent areas with trees that produce acorns, nuts and other food items.
Areas with clearings under and around the trees are preferred, and explain the Fox Squirrel’s success in urban and suburban areas.
|
| Observation Tips - |
Fox Squirrels are frequently seen on the ground foraging for food.
Other times they can be located feeding in trees by listening for the sound of the unwanted part of nuts, Osage Oranges, etc falling to the ground.
A Fox Squirrel’s distinctive barking can sometimes betray its location high in the trees.
During mating season the commotion caused by heated chases is easy to spot. |
